XP Disk defragmenter
Running Disk Defragmenter
To run Disk Defragmenter, perform the following steps:
- Click the Start button, point to Programs, point to
Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk
Defragmenter.
The Disk Defragmenter Window appears.

- Click to highlight the volume that you want to defragment.
- Click the Analyze button.
The first gray bar labeled Estimated disk usage before defragmentation:
begins filling with colored bars, indicating the status of files in the
volume being processed.When the analysis is complete, a window appears
advising whether the volume needs to be defragmented.
- Click the Defragment Now button.
The second gray bar labeled Estimated disk usage after defragmentation:
begins filling with colored bars, indicating the status of files in the
volume being processed.
A status indicator along the bottom of the Disk Defragmenter window
tracks the progress of the defragmentation process.
A notice is displayed when the process is complete.

Contents Have Changed: Restarting, while performing the
defragmentation process, refer to the Microsoft Knowledge Base Article:
