Internet Explorer 5 and 6 Restrictions :

There are several online help pages that provide registry settings to help lock down settings and components of Internet Explorer 5.x.  Unfortunately, the original Microsoft Knowledge Base article that was the basis for these pages included a number of errors that, if followed, prevent you from implementing the restrictions.  Follow-up help pages posted by others also included the same errors so many people are now under the impression that these restrictions don't work. They do, if you use the correct settings. To clean up the mess that Microsoft has made, I have created this page with a list of the correct settings. I have tested these settings running Internet Explorer 5 on Windows2000.

These same restriction settings also apply in Internet Explorer 6.x. One issue that I discovered is that if you customize the toolbar in IE 6.x and then try to apply restrictions, Internet Explorer will ignore your settings. You'll need to reset the toolbar buttons to the default before applying your restrictions. Also, if you disable customizing the Toolbar, any of your specific toolbar restrictions will be ignored. I have tested these settings running Internet Explorer 6 on Windows2000.

I'll remind anyone who "hacks" the registry that you do so at your own risk. If you don't know what you are doing, learn how. I've found that the ability to change registry settings is a "must-have" skill for anyone who administers public workstations.

For each restriction listed below, add the Value Name as a type REG_DWORD. Set the Data Value to the value specified to enable the restriction.
